INSTRUMENT CARE

Musical instruments are very fragile, especially in the string family. In order to ensure your instrument stays in tip-top shape, please keep this list as a reminder:

  • When not playing, always keep your instrument in its case! The case is there to help protect the instrument from accidents as well as severe changes in the environment. Extreme heat or cold can damage your instrument, so always keep it safe indoors. Never leave your instrument in a hot car, or outside.

  • Remember to wipe down your instrument after playing. Using a soft cotton rag to wipe excess rosin off of your strings will prevent buildup and damage from residue.

  • Take care of your bow. Never touch the hairs of the bow with your hands. Oils from your fingers can dirty them and leave residue. Instead, handle the bow by the stick only.

These are all the important things you can do to keep your instrument in shape! There are other small maintenance items that may need to be addressed as we progress, such as when to change the strings, or re-hair the bow. These are things that I as the teacher will be looking out for and will let you know when your instrument needs some extra love and care!
